Abstract
The Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards system (NMMSS) is the national nuclear materials accounting system containing data reported by facilities under the reporting requirements issued by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The system is the official United States Government system for tracking nuclear materials for nuclear materials management purposes and for nuclear materials safeguards purposes, both for domestic and for international needs. Facing the need to modify the system in order to be year 2000 compliant, the system sponsors and the system operator have made the necessary changes to assure successful operation of the system in time for reporting in year 2000. Software revisions by the NMMSS operator were begun in December 1997 and completed at the beginning of April 1998. Comprehensive testing under the DOE requirements for a mission essential system has been completed and the system can now receive data in year 2000 format, that is, the year represented in a four-digit field.
