Abstract
Over the last four years the Department of Safeguards of the IAEA has introduced several major programmes to improve safeguards activi- ties in headquarters and has also significantly improved productivity of inspections in the field. In the next few years the Department will be meeting even greater challenges to increase productivity and respond to growing technical complexity of safeguards activities. The Department will need to make the best use of opportunities, such as enhanced cooperation with Member States, new safeguards technolo- gies, further staff development, improved management skills and the continued satis- faction of participation in the major non-proliferation verification system. Success will depend on good management maintaining a competent and dedicated staff, and support from Member States.
