Abstract
Company officials should meet to determine policy considerations such as: Should news media, observers, and/or legal representatives be permitted on company property during demonstrations. What method of control should be established for those individuals permitted on company property. Will demonstrators be allotted a space set aside on company property for their demonstration activities. Company officials should meet with public officials responsible for policing, protection, and prosecution. The role of company security must be determined, and company policy regarding subsequent prosecution of any trespassers formulated. Plans must be formulated for protection of company property, contract and company personnel, the general public, and also the demonstrators themselves. Company and contract personnel must be admonished to refrain from being involved in confrontations with demonstrators. A continuing dialogue should be maintained with the demonstrators by law enforcement and/or company officials to aid in planning and also to avert any escalation of demonstration activities. Productive public relation activities should also be formulated. A discussion of two recent demonstrations at the Marble Hill construction site illustrates implementation of the security plan in addition to the need for flexibility and continuing re-evaluation of the plan.
