AEC REGULATION OF PRIVATELY OWNED SPECIAL NUCLEAR MATERIAL

On August 26, 196U, the President signed the Private Ownership of Special Nuclear Materials Act which terminated mandatory Government ownership of special nuclear material within or under the jurisdiction of the United States. This new law, however, did more than terminate mandatory Government ownership, both in terms of other changes in the statutory framework under which the Commission operates and in terms of its effect on Commission policies and procedures with respect to the regulation and distribution of special nuclear material.
