Abstract

Staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have produced two video lectures to support a variety of nonproliferation training and education events hosted at the laboratory. One video is about containment and surveillance, and the other is about radiation physics. With the increase in interest in nonproliferation workshops for university students, the Safeguards Security and Technology group worked with the International Safeguards group to identify safeguards measurements topics that can be visually represented to efficiently explain the science. After completing the radiation physics video, the groups collaborated with the Learning Sciences group and created an interactive animation of how the shift register in an active well coincidence counter works. Using the videos in conjunction with the lectures enhances the students’ time in the laboratory by providing an easy-to-understand visualization, which ultimately enables ORNL staff to better use the available time for hands-on exercises. These videos and animations were created for mass distribution for both ORNL courses and have been added to the National Nuclear Security Administration-created nonproliferation portal.
