Advanced Reactor Safeguards and Security: R&D to Support the Nuclear Industry with U.S. Deployment

The Advanced Reactor Safeguards and Security (ARSS) program, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, addresses near term challenges that advanced reactor vendors face in meeting material control and accounting (MC&A), physical protection system (PPS), and cybersecurity requirements for reactors built in the U.S. The program is increasingly moving toward integrated thinking on safeguards and security to help reactor designers and operators develop optimized, yet robust plant protection systems. Safeguards, Safety, and Security by Design is a key aspect of this program area. High level program highlights are summarized along with a discussion on future planning for the program.
