Abstract
Nuclear regulators worldwide face challenges in a rapidly evolving operational landscape shaped by climate change, the war in Ukraine, emerging technologies, and renewed interest in nuclear energy. In response, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) emphasizes adaptable, forward-thinking international cooperation to address common challenges and reinforce the rules-based international order. The war in Ukraine has underscored the critical need for nuclear safety and security in conflict zones, amplifying the urgency of international collaboration on emergency preparedness and the protection of nuclear facilities. Simultaneously, the global demand for new nuclear power technologies requires a reassessment of safety frameworks and risk management strategies. Moreover, the role of nuclear energy in combating climate change necessitates regulatory readiness for new technologies. STUK's international cooperation prioritizes proactive engagement with key stakeholders, adapting to emerging threats and opportunities while maintaining a strong commitment to nuclear safety, security, safeguards, and environmental sustainability. This presentation outlines STUK's ongoing efforts to navigate these complexities and contribute to the evolving global nuclear safety and security framework in an era of rapid change and uncertainty.
