Abstract
The“33(rLa) mction haslongbeen used for the detection ofthermal neutrons. Boron is typically incorporated into a detecting system as BFj gas or as a loading in a scintillator. These detectors require high voltage for their operation and are not readily miniaturized. We report here the manufacture and testing of boron-coated solid-statedetectm that overcome these difllculties. The methods of coating will be described and examples of spectra obtained with neutron sources (moderated and unrnoderated) and gamma sources will be given. The applicability of these detectors to the monitoring of plutonium will be discussed.
