Abstract

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) established the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) in 2000 to help ensure that nuclear energy can meet the energy needs of the 21st century. At present, 41 IAEA Member States and the European Commission are members of INPRO. These countries represent over three quarters of the world´s population and GDP. INPRO brings together the spectrum nuclear technology holders and users including States with long established nuclear power production and industries as well as States just embarking on the use of nuclear power. They jointly consider international and national actions that would result in the required innovations in nuclear reactors, fuel cycles or institutional approaches. In addition, INPRO plays an important and unique role in helping its Members better understand the national, regional and global implications of future nuclear energy system development. To support that development, INPRO looks decades ahead and plays a key role in fostering innovation in technologies and institutional infrastructure. Over its 20 years INPRO adapted to the changes in the nuclear power industry and the needs of the globe for energy sources. INPRO has played a role in providing for the needs a of a planet looking to have sustainable energy sources that are environmentally beneficial and innovative. INPRO has and will be ever innovative in the areas of reactors, fuel cycles, institutional approaches to nuclear power, sustainable development, national strategic and long-term planning and development and provision of tools and services.
