Abstract
State-of-the-art technology and innovative processing algorithms are being combined to produce a portable Nuclear Weapons Identification System (NWIS) that will be useful in all stages of the nuclear weapon dismantlement process, from identification of deployed weapons systems to assay of stored fissile material. This type of system will also be useful for applications to process control, where it can be used to assure that a nuclear processing is normal; for criticality safety, where it can be used to measure the subcriticality of in-plant configurations or to provide data to validate criticality safety calculations; and for quantitative nondestructive assay of special nuclear material.
