Abstract
The March 1979 accident at Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) severely damaged the reactor 1 s fuel and resulted in approximately 130 metrie tonnes of radioactive fuel debris. Based on a March 1982 memorandum of understanding between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Department of Energy (DOE), the debris is shipped to DOE's Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) for research and interim storage. The debris from the reactor core will remain at the INEL until a permanent repository becomes available.
