Abstract
The photon emission from a 208 liter drum containing trace amounts of plutonium and americium forming lowlevel radioactive waste homogeneously embedded in concrete is computer modeled using the Monte Carlo Neutron Photon (MCNP) code. The modeling includes a high performance germanium detector at various points on the drum surface. A pulse-height detector tally measures the energy deposited in the germanium crystal. The photon emission drum count rate is predicted for the Ge detector by MCNP using a gaussian energy broadening. Small gram amounts of Pu and Am in the drum determine the exposure rate in mrem/hr/gram which is predicted using MCNP.
