Abstract
The utilization of radioactive materials for research and reaching at Columbia University is performed under a \"broad\" license issued by the Office of Radiation Control in New York City. The Health Physics Office at Columbia University administrates the broad license. Members of the faculty with the necessary training and experience are classified as Responsible Investigators and can request a Health Physics Authorization Number for one or more isotopes. Approval of these requests by the University Radiation Safety Committee is given after an evaluation of the amount of material to be used, location of use, available experimental facilities and previous experience of the Responsible Investigator has been made. The Health Physics Office maintains a record of these authorizations. All requisitions for radioactive materials must be approved by the Health Physics Officer prior to their conversion to purchase orders by the Purchasing Department. All radioactive materials shipped to the University are addressed to the Health Physics Office. Upon receipt of a shipment, the personnel in the Health Physics Office perform an incoming shipment survey. A shipment number is assigned to the package and it is inventoried into a computerized system.
