An Expert Systems Approach to NRTA

The development of an expert system (NMAX) and its applications to nuclear material accountancy at the International Atomic Energy Agency are described. Expert systems using production rules are found to be applicable to material accountancy in general and shown to possess significant advantages over conventional systems including ease of implementation and maintenance. The theoretical foundation and key implementation issues of the system are presented, along with sample applications and recent experience.
