Abstract
A system is being established to transport used fuel from Ontario Hydro's nuclear reactor stations to a possible future Canadian used fuel disposal centre, or to any other destination in Canada. The system being developed includes the options of road, rail and water transportation, and will have the capability for the routine transportation of large quantities of used fuel. Safeguards and security provisions are proposed for all three modes of used fuel transportation. The principal safeguards and security requirements for the system are that the provisions (a) meet the requirements of the IAEA safeguards program, and (b) comply with Canadian Atomic Energy Control Board regulations and licensing requirements for all phases of the three transportation modes.
