Abstract
Over the past several years, there have been numerous papers and presentations pointing out the need for an active and understandable public information program on radioactive materials transportation. One notable report from the Office of Technology Assessment stated in 1986 that public information on hazardous materials was \"a paramount policy issue area for congressional consideration\" and that existing public information programs needed improvement. While a wealth of information on radioactive materials transportation exists, it is largely targeted towards * technical audience. Technical facts help package designers, logistics and operations personnel, and shippers, carriers, inspection, and emergency response personnel. However, these facts are insufficient for communicating with the general public. They must be interpreted and presented in interesting and meaningful ways. This paper will describe a DOE assertive approach in developing understandable, accurate, and readily available information on radioactive materials transportation to the public.
