Abstract
.American National Standards are developed by several hundred organizations and committees, all accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under three recognized methods, Accredited Organization, Accredited Committee and Accredited Canvass. These methods are explained, as is the Institute's role as coordinator of the voluntary consensus standards system in the United States. Through this unique system standards developers, government agencies, industry groups, consumer/user groups, and others who have a direct and material interest in such standards are able to take an active part in their development. As overall coordinator of this system, ANSI stands in the center of this most active and essential worldwide activity. The Institute not only serves in the national arena, but is also this country's point of contact for the two primary international standards bodies, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and^he Intornational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In the nuclear area, ANSI carries out its functions through the Nuclear Standards Board (NSB). The makeup, activities and goals of this coordinating body are highlighted. The \"ANSI\" system is designed to identify a single, consistent set of voluntary American National Standards. How this system works is the essence of this presentation.
