Abstract
The different nuclear material categories, physical and chemical forms, and container descriptions encountered in nuclear installations in the European Communities are presented and analysed. Equipment, both non-destructive assay (NDA) instruments and containment and surveillance (C&S) hardware, currently used for verification activities is described. Material categories will be identified where presently used NDA techniques are insufficient or where no adequate techniques yet exist. Future needs for NDA and C&S equipment are discussed particularly with respect to the new large-scale nuclear installations presently under construction or in commissioning within the European Communities.
