Global Threat Reduction Initiative's U.S.-Origin Nuclear Material Removal Program: 2013 Update

The U.S.-Origin Nuclear Material Removal Program, which is part of the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Global Threat Reduction Initiative, removes eligible fresh and spent fuel from countries around the world for secure storage and disposition. The effort to remove U.S-origin fresh and spent nuclear fuel from abroad is in its 17th year and is based on the Nuclear Weapons Nonproliferation Policy Concerning Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel, adopted by the U.S. Department of Energy in consultation with the U.S. Department of State in 1996. This paper provides a brief update on the program and future activities. NNSA continues to seek involvement from research reactor operators and other stakeholders to identify and include all eligible research reactors, particularly ones that have not yet participated in the program.
