Waste Package Design and Materials Testing Programs

The proposed conceptual designs of the waste packages and protecting drip shield that are planned for submittal as part of the license application for the Monitored Geologic Repository, if the site is found suitable, are described along with their expected performance as part of the wase disposal system. The waste package designs cover all of the major waste forms presently scheduled for geologic disposal. The material selection process and the reasons for the selection of the materials for the containment barriers are given. The ongoing material testing programs intended to confirm the material selections are described.
