Abstract
As one of the largest shippers of Class 7 (radioactive) material in the world, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) must maintain vigilance in ensuring its transportation and packaging activities result in safe and compliant shipments. The challenge facing DOE is to make thousands of annual shipments in a safe, compliant and economical manner. The DOE Office of Packaging and Transportation (OPT) implements multiple approaches to assisting the DOE complex in assuring its activities are best-in-class for ensuring an exceptional safety and performance record for packaging and transportation (P&T). The approaches include a combination of automated tools, technical assistance and support, compliance assessments, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
