Abstract
Constellation Technology Corporation has developed a small, self-contained gamma-ray intensity counter which is well suited for use in safeguard, environmental monitoring, and nonproliferation applications. The unit utilizes a large volume mercuric iodide detector to detect the presence of gamma-ray energy photons. The count rate information is presented to the user in the form of a liquid crystal bargraph which is suitable for monitoring ambient radiation levels, supporting search activities, and performing customs inspections. In addition to a visual indication of the gamma-ray count rate, the unit provides both audible and vibratory alarms with user adjustable trip points. The unit is designed to be rugged and provide weather resistant operation. It provides a sensitivity of < 20 mR/hour at 662 keV while consuming » 2 mW from two readily available alkaline batteries. The unit is specified to operate over a –10 to +50 °C temperature range and is water resistant. The test results from a series of environmental and performance tests performed on ten prototype units will be presented and discussed.
