Abstract
A New ship for PNTL - A report on the launch of the latest ship to join the PNTL fleet This year sees the launch of the latest purpose built addition to the PNTL fleet of ships. The strategy of asset replacement is being implemented to maintain and develop the capability of the fleet for the international transport of nuclear materials. The paper introduces the new ship covering both concept and detail design. The new design features are described including the drive for better environmental performance. The build of the new ship is detailed and describes the trials that were performed and the choices that have been made. Programmes and construction are discussed and described. The lessons learned from 30 years of operation of the existing fleet, the changing regulations and the response to safety and operational aspirations of key stakeholders have been included. The paper discusses key issues such as manning levels. This wholly new design has had to encompass many stakeholder requirements. A description of the ship, essential parameters and key performance issues are described and discussed.
