Waste Package Designs and Materials Testing Program for the Potential Yucca Mountain High Level Waste Repository

Over the repository lifetime, the high level waste packages will perform various functions that will change with time. During the 100-year plus operational period, the packages will function as the vessels for handling, emplacing, and retrieving (if necessary) the waste. During the first 10,000 years following repository closure, the waste packages will be relied upon as containment barriers to release of radionuclides.
