Abstract
The United States and Russia are responsible for large and growing quantities of stored nuclear material from dismantled nuclear weapons. Assuring that this material is managed to the highest standards of safety, security, bilateral transparency and international accountability is a significant task. Fortunately, technology with proper system integration can be used to help ensure these highest standards are adhered to in a cost-effective manner. This paper will provide an overview of the benefits of a Storage Monitoring System (SMS), goals for future systems, “SMS-1997” -- a step towards the future, and a summary of US/Russia Lab-to- Lab cooperation in developing storage monitoring systems.
