Abstract
A number of concerns have been voiced regarding the large nwnber of shipments that will be required to move spent fuel from commercial power reactors in the US. to DOE storage/disposal facilities once the latter are placed in operation. These concerns cover a range of issues from safety, the adequacy of emergency response capabilities, to the impact on traffic and traffic patterns. This paper develops parametrically the numbers of shipments required to move 3,000 MTU/year in the form of spent fuel under a variety of cask capacities and fuel characteristics asswnptions, and the number of casks needed to do so. It also analyses the incremental traffic impact on roads and rail lines under a variety of conditions.
