Abstract
On the basis of a Government resolution for the disposal of waste from nuclear power stations, development work has been done on the direct disposal of spent fuel elements since 1979. In the period 1981 - 1984, the necessary work was done as part of a program sponsored by the BMFT \"Alternative disposal technologies\", to study the technical feasibility of this solution and to establish a safety evaluation in order to be able to consider this solution as an alternate to reprocessing. From 1985, the German industry continued to work on the development of a final storage cask and the planning of a pilot conditioning plant (P.C.P.). The results of this work are the presented two containers - the final disposal cask for final storage in drifts - the final disposal canister for final storage in bore holes
