Abstract
This paper describes a data management system designed explicitly for a data bank of gamma spectrometry measurements. The system is in operation at the PERLA laboratory of the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities at Ispra. The primary purpose of the system is the storage of both gamma spectrometry measurement data and sample description data and the subsequent analysis of this data for performance evaluation purposes. As well as discussing the data management system at PERLA, the paper widens the topic by looking at the relationship between the kind of performance evaluation of gamma spectrometry which can be carried out in development laboratories and the aspects of performance evaluation for safeguards which can best be carried out by safeguards authorities. This discussion is used to identify some of the performance evaluation application functions of a safeguards headquarters data management system for gamma spectrometry measurements.
