Role of the U.S. Geologic Repository Program in Achieving Non-Proliferation Objectives

Abstract
The Department works collaboratively with other nations to address the need for final disposition of nuclear materials and promote our nonproliferation policy objectives. This work includes: ? Cooperative efforts through the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Developmentā€™s Nuclear Energy Agency, which represents approximately 30 member nations, and through the International Atomic Energy Agency; ? Membership in the newly formed International Association for Environmental Disposal of Radioactive Waste (EDRAM), composed of geologic disposal program implementors from ten nations. ? Separate bilateral agreements with Canada, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain; ? Development of a cooperative initiative with Russia, focused on the proper management of Russian generated spent nuclear fuel, highlevel radioactive wastes and surplus weapons-usable material.
