Abstract
Network technology is bringing new dimensions to safeguard and security systems in that the intelligence of these systems can be distributed to the locations where the data is collected. These locations are nodes that can process the data before transmitting it to other nodes on the network. The new transmission protocol hardware is making it possible to apply network technology to build systems for safeguards and security applications that are both flexible and inexpensive. This paper will discuss how the sophisticated technology of the local area network (LAN) is being adapted for a new area of applications which might be referred to as a local surveillance network (LSN).
